Some people may have noticed that one limitation of the StackExchange platform is that you need to have over 250 reputation to create tags. With a new site like SemanticOverflow this is something of an issue since you can't tag questions appropriately as noone with enough reputation has posted a question with the tags you want to use yet - I keep running into this when I post new questions.

I suggest we use this thread (I've made it community wiki) to list useful tags that should be added to the system. I hope that Andrew as the admin of the site can add these through the backend somehow.

My suggestions:

  • Tags for all the standardised/popular serializations - rdf/xml, turtle, n3, ntriples, nquads, rdf/json, trig, trix etc.
  • Tags for standard ontologies and vocabularies - dublincore, dbpedia, foaf etc
  • Tags for the common programming languages people use - java, c#, php, ruby etc (some of these already exist)
  • namespace
  • specification

Please add your own lists of suggestions as answers to this question.

I hit 500 points so I can retag stuff now which is most handy – Rob Vesse Jan 27 at 15:33
StackOverflow wrote about tagging: blog.stackoverflow.com/2010/08/… We could really use some tag merging here. Tag scope would be lovely, too. – Jodi Schneider Aug 5 at 10:45

I'm close to the 250 points, after which I will start some tagging clean up business...

this up vote should push you over the limit... – Andrew Matthews Nov 17 at 22:28
ah - just realized - by making this a community wiki question, means you get no kudos for that vote. – Andrew Matthews Nov 17 at 22:34
well you get to create tags on new questions, but you still need 500 reputation before you can retag things – Rob Vesse Nov 18 at 9:09
@Rob, I just added new tags on a few of my existing questions... – Egon Willighagen Nov 19 at 15:42
Hi Egon, would want a "performance" tag, for adding to my (still unanswered) question. :) – Samuel Lampa Nov 27 at 7:52

Hi Rob, frustratingly, I am only freed of a few of the shackles of reputation related to voting and moderation, not from the business rules of the site. I can't do much in the back end that's not available in the front end. There's no admin tool to create tags outside of composing a question, and to add extra tags would require removing existing tags from the question - not sure if they then cease to exist if they were the only use of the tag.

I'm not sure what the benefit would be anyhow? It's not like we could or should mandate tags, though I could 'recommend' them in the FAQ if people were very concerned with tag pollution. Is it a problem we are experiencing?

I don't think it's an issue of pollution, more a lack of being able to tag things appropriately – Rob Vesse Nov 18 at 9:09
But you can use whatever tags you like. What's the problem you're experiencing? – Andrew Matthews Nov 18 at 10:44

I think the rep requirements should be lowered until the site gets a bit farther in the bootstrap process...

Nicolas, AFAIK, the software does not allow that... – Egon Willighagen Dec 28 at 8:16
