I read the FAQ and as I understand it, to get some reputation your answers have to be voted up, but to vote someone's answer up you need 15 reputation points. So how is this supposed to take off when everyone has 1 reputation point?

I guess earning them in a way that promotes growth of the forum is healthier than gifting people with them. I just wonder what kind of sleepless obsession it took for the stack overflow guys to earn 50000+ points! – Andrew Matthews Oct 27 at 20:20
Don't forget to mark your question as answered, if you're satisfied with any of the answers. – Andrew Matthews Oct 28 at 6:54

You can get reputation by answering questions. When your answer is marked by the OP you get 10 points and the OP gets 2 points for accepting.

I agree though, that it seems like there needs to be a period where everyone can vote up peoples answers and questions even with < 15 reputation.

In the short term, I can vote up posts and answers to promote those who are already taking part.
